Taiwan shows up Australia in the rowdy parliament category

Federal Opposition Health Minister, Julia Gillard, has been ejected from parliament for 24 hours, in a fantastic show of hypocrisy and double standards. Gillard called Health Minister, Tony Abbott a “snivelling grub”. When asked to withdraw the comments Gillard replied: “If I have offended grubs I withdraw unconditionally.”

However accurate the sentiments may have been, Gillard, refusing to withdraw the comment “without reservation”, was barred, even though Tony Abbott, our favourite pro-lifer, escaped such treatment after using similar wording when asked to withdraw comments about Labor frontbencher Kelvin Thomson last week.

Perhaps Gillard could have picked up a few hints from Taiwain’s DPP Deputy Wang Shu Hui who attempted to eat a proposition in Taiwan’s parliament that intended to open direct transport links with China. Now that’s conviction.

Welcome to the blog of Wo! Magazine

Wo! Magazine will be starting up in the real sense in August. It will be a monthly mag, published online and targeting women who don’t run and hide at the mention of the ‘f-word’ - feminism that is. It will have both an Australian and Global focus. For more info visit the ‘coming soon’ version over here.

This blog will be an ongoing commentary and critique of pop-culture and mass media as it catches our attention and whimsy, whether it be out of amusement or outrage.

So keep an eye on this space. It’s a work in progress and will most likely remain that way.
