So, does everybody know that Amnesty Internationals’ 16 Days of Activism is on?
 Ok,now you do.
A global campaign, the 16 Days calls for an end to violence against women. Winding up on December 10th, International Human Rights Day, it symbolically links women’s rights with human rights.  Â
This year Amnesty International Australia’s aiming to collect 16,000 signatures in support of the Australian Government developing a National Plan of Action towards eliminating violence against women.Â
It’s not too late to sign the petition or  check out events in several states including music festivals, art exhibits, letter writing events and a rally.  I’m feeling lucky to be in Brisbane again, so I can head to the That Takes Ovaries! open mike event this Friday.  Â

Since the release of That Takes Ovaries!, Rivka Solomon’s inspiring collection of real life women’s stories of courage, open mike and theatre events have been held worldwide for women to share their personal stories of bravery.
As part of the 16 Days of Activism it’s coming to Brisbane, with Wonder Woman, aka performance artist Evelyn Hartogh flying in to MC. Women are invited to join in the fun and share their tales this Friday at Avid Reader West End, from 5.20pm.  Men welcome too, so long as your stories about a woman in your life who’s done something that took Ovaries!
Should be good.

Hi there blog readers,
Issue three of Wo! is now live so head over to the index and check it out.
This month features stories on morality laws in Indonesia, a run-down of NSW Liberal Party shenanigans, Ten-days at a silent meditation camp, an interview with a renowned pole dancer and lots lots more.
There are a few things to note:
1. The pdf version of issue three is not yet available. This is because I am human and am running a bit late this month but never fear it will be done.
2. You may notice that this issue is for October/November. Wo! is going bi-monthly for the time-being. Sorry to the avid readers who were getting used to their monthly instalment but time constraints are getting the better of me. I need to write my thesis.
3. There is now links at the bottom of the articles to discussion forums so readers can discuss and comment on the article and issues raised therein.
Issue four will be coming out in early December which means the deadline is November 4.
Happy reading!
Safia Amajan, chief of the Woman’s Affairs department in Afghanistan was killed by suspected Taliban gunmen today.
The BBC reports that her requests for secure transport and bodyguards was rejected but The New York Times says she chose to travel in taxis to avoid being conspicuous.
Ms. Amajan preferred to take a taxi or public transport so as not to draw attention to herself, even though her office had cars and drivers, her nephew said. “She wanted to keep a low profile,†he said. “We wanted her to come and live with us in town, but she used to say, ‘If it’s God’s will, they will take me anywhere.’â€
Further to my post on skinny models, in August this year a Uruguayan model died of heart failure after her turn on the catwalk during Fashion Week in Montevideo, Uruguay. Her father told police that she had gone several days without eating.
A study has found that women are more likely to orgasm if they are graduates, speak English at home, have a managerial/professional occupation or have sex with other women.
And finally, Mark Latham is a moron:
“Australian mates and good blokes have been replaced by nervous wrecks, metrosexual knobs and tossbags,” Mr Latham writes in A Conga Line of Suckholes, published today.
Mr Latham, who left politics after leading Labour to defeat at the last general elections in 2004, blamed changes in the workplace and family, a rise in left-wing feminism and the prominence of neo-conservatism for creating “a crisis in male identity” and “debilitating” Australia’s language.
Surprise! Women’s rights have gone retro (and not in a good way) under the Howard Government. An article about the various steps backward in this “Howardist” era.
Abbott introduces more shitty guidelines in order to attack women’s reproductive rights.
Doctor found guilty in NSW in first illegal abortion case in 25 years.
Robin Morgan explores the use of rape as a weapon in conflict zones, using the rape of 14 year old Iraqi girl by US military as starting point.
All this is thoroughly depressing. Does anyone have any good news? I think I might go read NW or something…
